인류는 오랜 세월 동안 지구의 풍부한 광물과 에너지 자원을 이용하며 문명을 발전시켜 왔다. 하지만 이러한 과정 속에서 우리는 지구 환경에 깊은 흔적들을 남기고 있다. 본 교과목에서는 푸른 해성 지구의 진화와 시스템을 이해하고, 우리의 다양한 활동들이 지구에 미치는지 영향을 여러 시각에서 살펴본다. 나아가 급변하는 지구 환경 변화 속에서 우리가 나아갈 미래 방향에 대해서 고민해 본다.

Over a long history, humanity has developed civilization by using the Earth’s rich mineral and energy resources. However, in this process, we have left a significant footprint on the Earth’s environment. This course helps students understand the evolution and systems of our Blue Planet and explores the various ways in which human activities impact the Earth from multiple perspectives. Moreover, it encourages reflection on the future directions we should take amid the rapidly changing environmental conditions of our planet.

Introduction to geophysics is offered for sophomores in the division of geology and geophysics. This course aims to illustrate how different types of geophysical observations provide constraints on Earth’s gross structure and composition. The geophysical techniques include seismic refarction and reflection, earthquake seismology, gravity, magnetics, and heat flow.

지구 역사 이해에 있어 한 축을 담당하고 있는 고생물학의 개론을 공부한다. 지질학과 생물학적 지식을 바탕으로 지난 40여 년간 급속도로 발달해 온 고생물학의 전반적인 개념(계통 분류, 생물의 진화, 멸종, 고생태, 생지리, 생층서)을 이해하고, 대표적인 고생물 분류군에 대한 배경 지식을 이론 수업과 화석 표본 실습을 통하여 습득한다.

Title: Paleontology & Lab. Outline: This introductory course covers fundamental knowledges on paleontology that include systematics, evolution and extinction, paleoecology, paleogeography, and biostratigraphy, with hand specimen and thin section observations on major fossil groups.

The purpose of this course is to understand the principles of geography and use them to learn the concept of time in geology and the evolution of the Earth's ages after its birth. Students can also understand the large-scale interactions between Eath's sub-systems based on the evolutionary history of variou creatures on Earth through this course.

화성암의 구조와 조직 및 산출상태에 대해 알아보고, 화성암을 분류하는 방법에 대해 살펴본다. 다양한 형태로 산출하는 여러 종류의 화성암의 성인에 대해 다룬다. 또한 실험을 통해 화성암의 구성광물 및 조직에 대한 육안 및 현미경 관찰을 실시함으로써 암석의 식별 및 기원에 대한 능력을 배양하는데 그 목적이 있다.

This course deals with structure, texture, occurrences, and classification of igneous rocks. It also discusses the petrogenesis of various igneous rocks using field work data, petrography, and geochemical data. During the laboratory exercise, student will be trained to identify igneous minerals and igneous textures both under the petrographic microscope and with unaided eyes, and classify igneous rocks based on mineral mode and texture.

Effective structural geology interpretation is of increasing importance for subsurface geological studies. “Elements of Structural Geology” introduces key concepts in faulting, fracture and folding in the context of creating structural interpretations from incomplete datasets.

This course focuses on identification and characteristics of sedimentary rocks and sedimentary processes within fluids. These knowledges will be further applied to petroleum geology and environmental geology.

지하 지질 상태를 밝히기 위하여 지층의 물리적 특성차이에 기인된 물리현상을 계측, 분석하고 그 결과를 해석하는 지구물리탐사의 원리와 방법을 개론적 수준에서 소개하고 이해시킨다. 강의 대상으로는 전기탐사, 전자탐사, 방사능탐사, 물리검층, 중력탐사, 자기탐사 그리고 탄성파탐사가 포함된다. 수업을 통하여 지하 지질 상태를 밝히기 위한 지구물리탐사의 전반적 원리를 이해하며 전기탐사, 전자탐사, 방사능탐사, 물리검층, 탄성파탐사, 중력탐사, 자기탐사에 관한 구체적 탐사방법을 습득하게 된다.

In this course, students will learn the principles and methods of geophysical exploration that measure, process, and interpret the results of physical phenomena caused by differences in physical properties of geologic formations. Course subjects include electrical, electromagnetic, radioactive, geophysical logging, gravity, magnetic, and seismic exploration methods. Through this class, students will understand the general principles of geophysical exploration to identify the state of underground geology and learn specific exploration methods on electric, electromagnetic, radioactive, physical logging, seismic, gravity, and magnetic exploration.

This course deals with the genetic mechanisms of metamorphic rocks from igneous, sedimentary, and pre-existing metamorphic rocks with chang in temperature, pressure, and infiltration of fluids into protolith.

이번 강좌를 통해 퇴적층 내에서의 에너지 자원(주로 석유)의 생성, 이동, 부존 과정을 살펴보고, 근원암, 저류암, 덮개암, 트랩의 관점에서 특정 퇴적분지에서의 탄화수소 부존가능성을 평가할 수 있도록 할 것이다. 석유 생성 과정을 유기지화학적 관점으로 해석하고 형성된 석유가 배태되는 trap구조를 구분하여 제시하고자 하며 지구물리학적 탐사를 통해 획득한 자료의 해석 방법을 다루게 된다.

This course focues on the understanding of oil and gas about how to be formed, migrated and trapped in sedimentary rocks. Several geophysical exploration methods will be covered such as seismic survey and well-logging. Finally hydrocarbon potential will be evaluated by calculation of four main factors- source, reservoir, seal and trap.

-지구자원 및 지구환경관련 공부를 하는 대학생으로서 꼭 갖추어야할 기본적인 지구통계분석 지식을 습득하고 이를 활용하여 실제적인 자료를 분석하는 방법을 학습한다.-수업에서 다루는 주요내용은 지구(지질)통계의 정의, 실제 환경자료(토양오염도, 지하수 오염물질 농도 등)를 도시하는 방법 및 이들에 대한 통계적 분석을 추출하는 방법 등을 포함한다.

Acquire the basic geostatistical knowledge required by undergraduates pursuing earth resources and environment related studies and apply this to learn the practical data analysis methods. Material covered by the lectures includes the definition of geostatistics, mapping techniques for actual environmental data (soil pollution levels, groundwater pollutant concentration, etc.), and statistical analysis of above data.

This course deals with the genesis of metallic minerals which are widely being used in our life. It treats characteristics of ore-forming fluids, classification of ore deposits, and origin of various types of mineral deposits.

A geological survey is the systematic investigation of the geology beneath a given piece of ground for the purpose of creating a geological map. A geological survey map typically superimposes the surveyed extent and boundaries of geological units on a topographic map, together with information of geological elements. The maps and reports created by geological survey organisations generally aim for geographic continuity and completeness in establishing the spatial patterns of near-surface rock units.

This subject examines the biogeochemical cycle necessary for the Earth to maintain normal life. To this end, basic geomicrobiology studies the roles that microorganisms have played and are playing in basic geological processes.

This course introduces the roles of mineralogy in solving environmental issues. The structure and reactivity of key environmental minerals will be highlighted with fundamental concepts required to study the roles of minerals in toxic metal remediation, nuclear waste disposal, air dust, and climate change mitigation.

This course is designed to study on surface morphological characteristics by short and long term changes in atmospheric environment, soil zone, and subsurface geology. Students will be trained for the principles of surveying, data analyses, and experimental analyses on geomorphological studides.

The class also includes how to do field survey, to analyze the geological data, and to make geological report. This course also provides the various infomration on jobs to help obtaining the positions they want.

General information, bottom topography, shallow- and deep-sea sedimentary systems are covered. Also, paleoenvironmental reconstruction and paleoclimate changes based on marine sediments are mentioned. Marine geology of Yellow, South and East Sea are included.

This subject focusses on the classification and application of microorganisms in hydrogeological environments. Particularly, this course covers the role of microorganisms related to biogeochemical processes such as nitrogen, phosphorus, iron, and sulfur circulation in aquatic ecosystems. Furthermore, this subject studies the role of microorganisms in climate change.
